Father Brian Thomas McSweeney was born in New York City, the fourth of five children of Dr. John T. McSweeney and Virginia Mahony. Baptized at the Church of the Immaculate Heart of Mary in Scarsdale, N.Y., he attended IHM Parochial School under the guidance of the Sisters of Charity and later, the Sparkhill Dominicans. Fr. McSweeney then went on to attend Iona Prep School in New Rochelle, N.Y. run by the Congregation of Christian Brothers (the Irish Christian Brothers), and Georgetown University in Washington D.C. under the Jesuits.
After graduating University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, Father worked in New York City for Irving Trust Company and Citibank while earning a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Iona College. Recalling his desire for the priesthood as a child, Father McSweeney began classes at the Neumann Residence of the Archdiocese of New York in January of 1984, and was accepted as a candidate for the priesthood at Saint Joseph’s Seminary, Dunwoodie.
Ordained to the Holy Priesthood on November 12, 1988 by His Eminence John Cardinal O’Connor, Father’s first assignment was to the Church of the Holy Trinity in Poughkeepsie under Bishop Anthony Mestice and Bishop James Mahoney. On January 1,1992, he was asked to join the Administration of Our Lady of Lourdes High School in Poughkeepsie as Assistant Principal, and in September of 1993 he joined the faculty of Kennedy Catholic High School in Somers.
In May of 1998, Father McSweeney was appointed to the Pastoral Office of the Curia in New York as Assistant to the Vicar General and Vice Chancellor, serving under Bishop Patrick Sheridan and Bishop Robert Brucato in the Administration of Cardinal O’Connor and Cardinal Egan.
On July 1, 2001 Father McSweeney was appointed Pastor of the Church of Our Lady of Loretto in Cold Spring, N.Y., and on August 1, 2013 as Pastor of the Church of Saint Augustine in Ossining.
